Bailey Approved Caravan Repair Centre

If your Bailey of Bristol Alu-Tech caravan has developed a soft, spongy, or damaged floor, it’s not something to overlook. While the Alu-Tech construction system is well known for its strength and durability in the walls and roof, the floor itself is still built using traditional timber-based materials.

This means that if water ingress occurs and is left untreated, moisture can soak into the floor structure, leading to rot over time and ultimately compromising the structural integrity of the caravan.

Our Bailey floor repair service is designed to restore strength, safety, and comfort—delivering a long-lasting solution without the need for costly or invasive full floor replacements.

With years of experience working on Bailey caravans and being one of the only Bailey back to factory repairers in the country, we understand the materials, methods, and common failure points better than general repair shops. Our focus is simple: Restore your caravan floor to a safe, solid, and long-lasting condition—so you can get back on the road with confidence.

Bailey Alu-Tech system

The Bailey of Bristol Alu-Tech construction system is widely regarded as one of the best in the industry and for good reason.

At its core, Alu-Tech uses a precision-engineered aluminium framework, where interlocking aluminium rails are bonded together to create a strong, rigid skeleton. This frame is then combined with:

GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) outer panels, GRP inner wall panels and a high-density polystyrene insulation core

This layered, bonded structure creates a body that is:

  • Lightweight yet extremely strong
  • Highly resistant to water ingress in the walls and roof
  • Excellent for insulation and long-term durability.

In short, for the sidewalls and ceiling, Alu-Tech is a fantastic, modern construction method that performs exceptionally well.

While the upper structure benefits from this advanced system, the floor construction is different.

The floor in most Alu-Tech caravans is still built using a timber-based structure (a traditional sandwich floor with wooden elements). This is important because:

Wood is far more vulnerable to moisture than aluminium and GRP
If water ingress occurs anywhere in the caravan, it can travel downwards
Over time, moisture can soak into the floor layers, leading to:
Rot
Delamination
Soft or spongy areas underfoot

Even though the Alu-Tech body helps reduce water ingress risks, it doesn’t make the caravan immune.

If a leak develops—through seals, joints, or fittings—water can still find its way into the structure and eventually reach the floor. Once there:

  • Damage can spread unseen beneath the surface
  • The floor can gradually lose its strength and rigidity
  • Left unattended, it can compromise the structural integrity of the caravan

FAQs On Bailey Caravan Floor Repair

What causes floor problems in Bailey caravans?

The most common cause is water ingress. Even with the strong body construction used by Bailey of Bristol, moisture can enter through seals, joints, or fittings. Over time, this water travels down into the timber-based floor, leading to rot, delamination, and soft spots.

Are Bailey caravan floors made of wood?

Yes. While the Alu-Tech system uses aluminium and GRP for the walls and roof, the floor still contains timber-based materials, making it more vulnerable to moisture damage if leaks occur.

Can a soft or spongy floor be repaired?

In most cases, yes. Specialist repair techniques can reinforce and restore the affected areas without needing a full floor replacement—saving both time and money.

Do I need a full floor replacement?

No, for 99% of the time. Full replacements are only necessary in severe cases. Many issues can be resolved with targeted structural repairs which are less invasive and more cost-effective.

How serious is a soft floor?

It can become serious if ignored. What starts as a small soft patch can spread and eventually affect the structural integrity of the caravan. Early repair is key to preventing larger, more expensive damage.

How do I know if my Bailey caravan floor needs repair?

Look out for:

  • Spongy or springy areas underfoot
  • Uneven or dipping flooring
  • Creaking noises when walking
  • Signs of damp or water damage

If you notice any of these, it’s worth getting a professional inspection.

How long does a floor repair take?

Most repairs can be completed within a few days, depending on the extent of the damage. This is significantly quicker than a full floor replacement.

Will the repaired area be as strong as before?

Yes. When carried out correctly, repairs restore the floor’s strength and rigidity, making it safe and comfortable to use again.

Will you fix the source of the water ingress?

Absolutely. Any repair should include:

  • Identifying the cause of the leak
  • Sealing or repairing the issue
  • Preventing future water ingress

This ensures the problem doesn’t return.

Is it safe to use my caravan with a damaged floor?

It’s not recommended. Continued use can worsen the damage and increase repair costs. Addressing the issue early is always the safest and most economical option.

How much does Bailey floor repair cost?

Costs vary depending on the size and severity of the damage, but repairs are typically much cheaper than full floor replacement. A quote can be provided once the issue is assessed.

Do you carry out insurance work for floor repairs?

Yes, we can undertake insurance-related repair work on your caravan floor. If your damage is the result of an insured event (such as water ingress from a sudden failure or accidental damage), we’re happy to assist with the process.

We can:

  • Provide detailed assessments and repair reports
  • Supply quotes suitable for insurance claims
  • Liaise with you to ensure the repair meets insurer requirements

We recommend contacting your insurer first to confirm your cover, then getting in touch with us so we can support you through the next steps.
