A roof-mounted air conditioning unit is a type of caravan or motorhome air con that’s installed directly into the roof of the vehicle, usually in place of (or in addition to) an existing roof vent. It may not be suitable for all caravans, due to the construction of the caravan manufacturers roof supports.

Storage box air cons on the other hand, are installed inside a storage compartment, such as under a bed, bench, or in a floor locker. It can be more costly to install but can be fitted to pretty much every caravan. It can obviously take up storage space and holes will be drilled in the caravan for the vent ducts to be installed around the caravan.

Portable air cons are more cost effective and flexible. Freestanding units that you can place wherever needed inside the caravan, usually perches on the window. It may not be as efficient and powerful then a fitted one though.

Which One Should You Choose?

The right choice depends on your caravan’s design, your travel habits, and your budget:

Roof-mounted – Best for maximum efficiency and space-saving, but only if your caravan roof can take the weight.

Storage box – Great for caravans without suitable roofs, or if you want to keep your roof free for other accessories.

Portable – Best for occasional use, budget-conscious buyers or concerned about using up your payload permanently.

    FAQs

Can roof mounted air conditioning be fitted to my existing caravan?

In most cases, yes. The majority of modern caravans can have air conditioning installed, provided there is sufficient roof strength, electrical capacity, and space for the unit. A professional assessment is recommended before installation.

How much power does a caravan air conditioner use?

Most caravan air conditioning units require a 230V mains hookup and typically draw between 3–5 amps once running. Startup power can be higher, so a good quality electrical supply is important.

Will air conditioning work on a campsite hookup?

Yes, on most UK and European sites with a 10–16 amp hookup. On lower-amp pitches, you may need to manage other electrical appliances to avoid tripping the supply.

Can I run caravan air conditioning off solar or a leisure battery?

Generally no. Caravan air conditioning units require mains electricity and are not suitable for running solely on solar panels or leisure batteries.

Does air conditioning also provide heating?

Certain caravan air conditioning systems include a heat pump function, allowing them to provide warm air in cooler weather but not all. The portable ones tend to just do cool to serve a purpose.

How noisy is caravan air conditioning?

Modern units are designed to operate quietly, especially on low or night modes. Roof-mounted units may be slightly more noticeable outside the caravan, while under-bench systems tend to be quieter internally. Portable split air con unis also can be rather noisy.

Will air conditioning add weight to my caravan?

Yes. Most units add between 20–35kg, which will affect your caravan’s payload. It’s important to check your available payload before installation. However, as for portable ones then as long as it isn’t in the caravan whilst towing then it won’t use up your payload… pop it in your car instead.

Does fitting air conditioning affect my caravan warranty?

If fitted by an approved installer using manufacturer-approved equipment, air conditioning should not affect your caravan warranty. Poor or incorrect installation could cause issues, so professional fitting is essential.

Do you remove an existing rooflight to fit a roof-mounted air conditioning?

Yes. Roof-mounted air conditioning units are usually installed in place of a standard 400mm x 400mm rooflight. If required, the air con can often be relocated elsewhere in the caravan if the roof support is there.

How long does air conditioning fitting take?

Installation typically takes 1 working day, depending on the unit type and caravan layout. In some cases, additional electrical work may slightly extend this time.
