What effects a motorhomes value?

Valuing a motorhome is very similar to a car, although it is a little more complex. There is no automatic way to value a motorhome due to having a few extra factors that apply compared to a car. Here is a comprehensive list of the factors that decide the value of a motorhome;

  • Make & Model of Habitation
  • Make & Model of Chassis
  • Specification
  • Age of the motorhome
  • Berth / layout
  • Mileage
  • Overall Condition
  • MOT
  • Service history

Let’s delve into these:

Make and Model Of The Habitation:

Despite the make and model of the cab/chassis whether that is Fiat, Peugeot or Mercedes the make and model of the habitation side of the motorhome has a huge impact on the value of your motorhome.

This is because the make and model differs on the specification and build quality. Different manufacturers are more desirable and classed as premium such as Hymer and Morello, then there are also different ranges within each make starting from a range which is a lower spec at a lower price and a higher spec at a higher price. Swift is a good example of this with the Swift Edge as the entry level motorhome in the Swift range starting from £65,000 and then they have their KonTiki range which is well over £150,000.

Make and Model Of The Chassis:

Just like a car the make does make a difference to the value. As you would expect a Mercedes is more expensive than a Fiat or Peugeot. But not only this there is also the factors of whether it is manual or automatic, its bhp and engine capacity.

Specification:

Now in most cases the make and model will say a lot about the specification especially with British manufactured motorhomes as these are built with certain spec set as standard depending on the range you opt for. However, when it comes to the continental brands such as KNAUS this is where it gets a little more difficult. Continental motorhomes are usually configured by the end consumer. So, despite 2 motorhomes being the same make and model one may have a completely different heating system to the other as the consumer who first bought the van may have customised it to their needs.

So specification can play a huge part in determining the value of a motorhome especially for continental brands.

Berth / Layout:

Just like a caravan certain layouts and berths are more desirable than others. For example, fixed bed models tend to be more desirable as well as 4 berths compared to 2 berths. Due to the popularity of specific berths and layouts this of course makes a motorhome more valuable due to their saleable configuration.

Other Factors:

Other factors listed are what you may already expect from the automotive industry such as, age and mileage can be a significant factor as well as ensuring servicing is up to date to ensure the motorhomes chassis is in tip top condition.

How to improve your motorhomes value?

Some things are out of your hands such as, make, model and age. Although, there are certain things you can do to improve the value of your motorhome such as making sure your motorhome is up to date with its service history and ensuring that your motorhome is in good condition.

Other factors as we have mentioned are specification. The more spec your motorhome has the more desirable it could be, spec can be anything from solar panels, heating system, air con and even a bike rack or tow bar. There are lots of added spec that can improve the value.

Strangely enough, time can also be a factor. Motorhoming is usually associated as a summer holiday so, if you’re looking to sell up then selling just before the season starts may see yourself earn more money than the winter where there is less demand for motorhomes.

Here is a list of all of the things you can do to improve your motorhomes value:

  • Specification / Extras Included In The Motorhome
  • Time Of Year You Intend To Sell
  • Condition / Functionality Working Correctly
  • Maintain Service History / Recently Serviced
  • MOT Passed

So it can be hard to find your exact motorhome online.

This is where we come in as we understand how much mileage can affect the price by as well as the transmission and specification of the chassis itself. To get a quick quote fill in the details below…

If I want to sell my motorhome should I sell it to a dealer or privately?

If you’re looking to sell your motorhome the next question is how should you sell your motorhome.

There are 3 ways to sell your motorhome. One is part exchange yours for another. Sometimes this can allow you to get the best deal from a dealership as you are more likely going to get a better deal on the new motorhome than if you were a cash buyer as the dealer will make profit not only on the new motorhome but also you part exhnage, so they will be able to offer a better overall deal.

The next one option is selling it privately. This is the best way to make the maximum amount of money for your motorhome although, it is more hassle. You’ll have to deal with the customer, prep the motorhome and deal with all of the admin once it has been sold. Another, con to selling privately is security. The reason we raise this is because if you are selling a motorhome on your drive you are then inviting strangers to your home. Selling privately also doesn’t guarantee that you’ll sell it or it may take longer to sell it.

The last option is selling your RV directly to a dealer or a motorhome buyer. This is the most quickest and convenient way to sell. You are almost guaranteed to sell and it is hassle free. So if you’re looking to sell up quickly then we would recommend opting for this option.
